Shining Seas Title

Shining Seas Quilt

Shining Seas © Kathleen Bissett 1993
57" x 78"
Machine pieced and hand quilted

This log cabin quilt was made for the permanent collection of the Joseph Schneider Haus Museum, as part of the Folk Artist-in-Residence program for 1992. The only stipulation given was that it somehow be linked with traditional quilts of Waterloo County. The log cabin was chosen, as it is a block I am particularly fond of and it fit the criteria. I was intrigued by the contemporary log cabin quilts which have been appearing in quilting books and magazines that appear to have curves. So my challenge was to design an original one. This quilt evolved as I was playing with a variety of fabrics. Many blocks later, I found a fabric that was particularly effective in linking blue with yellow. I found that once the quilt was completed it gave the impression of sunlight shimmering on water.

The original title of this quilt, "May There Be Sunlight From Sea To Shining Sea" reflected the theme of the 1993 CQA/ACC National Quilt Show - CANADIAN CONTENT. I felt the sunlight on water was a positive expression of optimism for this country - from coast to coast. The quilt was part of the 1993 CQA/ACC Juried Exhibition during the first week of June in Vancouver.
